No, this has nothing to do with Yu-Gi-Oh. Kaiba is a short anime series from 2008 created by Masaaki Yuasa, of Tatami Galaxy, Mind Game and Devilman Crybaby fame. It's also tied for my favorite anime of all time.
Kaiba is one of the most moving and thought provoking pieces of media I've ever seen. It begins with a boy with a hole in his chest and memory loss traveling through a truly bizarre acid-trippy world trying to recover his memories, but it goes far, far deeper.
It's a series that examines the concept of identity at a fundamental level, and even touches on gender. It's also incredibly heavy, sad and depressing, but it's all very purposeful. Loss is a major theme. I wouldn't recommend watching if you're in an emotionally fragile place. If you can stomach that, it gets my highest anime recommendation.
It's only 12 episodes long and is, for the moment, available in its entirety on youtube. It's a series that means a lot to me, so I hope you at least give it a try if you haven't seen it and are able.
