well, not only did i pass the 100 GB free tier for netlify bandwidth (i'll be paying $55 for an extra 100 GB this billing cycle... if this continues i'll upgrade to the $19/mo tier that has 1 TB bandwidth instead!)

BUT i also massively went over my plausible analytics budget. i was only paying for the 500k tier, but i recently went over 2 MILLION pageviews this month???

plausible is pretty expensive, so i'm just switching to the 5M plan on a month-to-month basis in hopes that i can go back down after this month or the next when the pokemon hype dies down a bit lol

that's $27/mo to $99/mo for the analytics increase lol

so yeah uh, pokemon scarlet/violet's popularity has already cost me about $127 lol...

it's on netlify already, so the whole thing is on a CDN :)

100 GB of bandwidth has been more than enough for the last 9 years of traffic, but pokemon scarlet/violet really pushed things thru the roof.

a friend of mine has been sending me links, and a couple popular twitch streamers have name dropped it in the lead up to scarlet/violet, so i think that's what pushed the traffic so high this time.

i definitely appreciate that bunny cdn appears to have straightforward usage based billing. i used to host the site directly on s3+cloudfront, but i really didn't like the experience of managing that myself. netlify has definitely been my best friend for "JAM stack" stuff thus far, but i'm not surprised that their rigid pricing structure is not ideal for a small fry like me who's grown a bit too big for their breeches lol.

the real killer here is those analytics costs... which... i mean, i could just turn off analytics... but it's fun! i like knowing that, for example, spain recently became the 2nd most common country for visitors, shortly after a spanish youtuber featured the site on their stream.

True but in this case Netlify is acting as a static site host as well. You wouldn't get rid of Netlify, you'd just put Bunny or equivalent in front (as a caching CDN), so that most of your bandwidth was there.

netlify analytics is server side, which isn't a good fit for an SPA; i'd just get basic visit information, not any detail about pages in use or time spent on pages. and with my number of page views i'd have to be on the $99 business plan anyway.

i don't need analytics, to be clear, i just think it's interesting. also netlify analytics is priced per site, and i add analytics to a bunch of my other sites for fun, which i wouldn't do if each was another $9/month or something

i'm definitely averse to adding too much setup to all this, and adding a CDN in front of a CDN is something i'm not super interested in dealing with.

the open source application is interesting, i might consider that in the future if this keeps up. though i'm not opposed to paying netlify for the service. i think netlify is a great value, and i like the product a lot. it's just weird going from free to $19 instantly.

also yeah cloudflare is completely off the table lol, no f'ing way lol
