today I'm feeling complicated about works by cis people in which characters are textually 'queer' in a safe technical sense but have little relation to queerness as a human experience, and how this is nonetheless something that will spark excitement with queer people because we are starving, and how I want to say 'I'm sick of things where the Nonbinary Rep is a fucking robot or whatever' without making people feel bad for feeling that way or resonating with them

like the experience of a work exists between author and audience, and I think a lot of the time the strength + validation queer people find in half-assed queer characters is not something the author themselves gets to enjoy credit for, if that makes sense

yeah 100% I think it's reasonable to say "queer folks can enjoy/be validated by accidental rep coming from primarily cis media" and also "that is not enough, it's nothing, you get no points for making this". those are both true things imo.
