it's always really striking to me how the climax of gundam 0079 is just as much about sayla as it is about amuro or char... "you're an adult now. it's time to stop playing war" really feels like a thematic summation of gundam as a whole. the shot of sayla reaching out for him with his broken helmet floating away is so iconic to me... and then she has to leave, and go back to her friends on the white base, and live.

god that feels very appropriate looking back. it's been a while since I've watched 0079 but it went that Char never could stop with war and scheming and that was the end of him. Sayla ended up finding her own path in life without Char and all Char could do was wage war for himself while pretending it was for the good of earth and everyone on space.

yeah, absolutely... she's the one who really gets to grow up. and it feels like char knows that here, that he's trapped (or trapping himself) in this very immature cycle of war and death and killing

It honestly drives me insane. If I could change one thing about UC it would be to leverage Sayla more (and probably not in the ways that she shows up briefly in the sequels, but honestly even if that were what she was up to, build around that!)
