There's a sort of mantra I pull out any time someone is bewildered by the technicalness of computers or software: These things didn't come from outer space, they were designed by people for people to understand and use
But more basically, even a piece of software showing you an error message like "sorry you need service pack X to use this", represents a deliberate act on the part of a developer to add a kind of usability: it fails to be useful, but in a useful way.
