the inciting incident for elon to crack down on at-elonjet and, apparently, everyone in the news media who has ever talked about it was apparently that someone jumped in front of his car and banged on the hood, and he claimed that the person had followed him from the airport.

someone from bellingcat was able to geolocate the video he took of the incident, and found that it was just south of pasadena.

the closest airport that elon's jet has flown into all month is hollywood burbank, which is 16 miles away.

in reply to @vogon's post:

so, they banned joinmastodon because they had tweeted "did you know? you can follow @.elonjet on mastodon [link to elonjet at mastodon.social's profile]"; someone tweeted about this but they seem to have deleted their tweet since

I suspect masto did this intentionally, for the publicity -- whether, in the long run, this is a wise decision or not, I have no idea

yeah, idk!

and yeah honestly I think the wave of bannings of JBGC chapters, nazi watches, and left-wing news sources (IGD, crimethinc, etc.) bodes far more poorly for the future of the site than the whole elonjet debacle.

Now that I think about it, I suspect that the Fox News brainworms have rendered Elmo literally unable to see the difference between mainstream journalists like @.donie and straight-up antifa groups.

That said, the journalists for organizations like NBC or the Intercept certainly have access to a lot more alternative resources for messaging than independents like Rupar, and far more than groups than JBGC or IGD. Those groups will feel the impact in a way that a CNN reporter won't.

this's the last straw for huz to jump ship, (finally! :tada:) so i'm doing the world shortest Mastodon onboarding. hopefully I hit the important bits before sending him out the door ;)

tbf this applies only to official FAA data feeds -- all of the big "flight radar" sites have their own ADS-B receiver networks, which aren't subject to the LADD

this data is being blasted out into the public air by basically every licensed aircraft operating legally

yeah, I was unaware of PIA -- per the FAA docs it looks like the big requirement is that you need a third-party call sign, by which ATC can refer to you while still enabling government actors to figure out who you actually are

I'm not sure how much work is involved in getting a third-party call sign but I'm sure the (second-)richest man on earth could probably swing it

that said, it sounds like a single aircraft is still going to have a single ICAO address, which means that given sufficient time and data, people could probably correlate the comings and goings of his private jet well enough to figure out which private ICAO address corresponded to it anyway

which really gets at the silliest thing about the whole ordeal -- he could hide his identity by just chartering a jet from someone else, except that's not as prestigious and also doesn't give him the ability to sexually harass all of the cabin crew

Yeah, per conversations with some other folks (hi guys), apparently Elmo already has an anonymous third-party callsign for his private jet, and the elonjet dude figured out what it was because there's only ever like two or three planes with those callsigns in the air at a time and Elmo likes to brag about where he's going.

huh, didn't know about this program either. sounds like it would be a bit of a process to have to reprogram (and recertify?) back to his actual ICAO hex whenever he leaves the US, I wonder if that would take too much of the fun out of being able to fly wherever whenever
