(quick context note: I'm not a US hospital worker, I'm a Canadian massage therapist)
One funny anecdote I can share - I work in a multidisciplinary clinic with about 20 people. In March, the clinic owner floated changing from our current mandatory masking policy to an optional one where therapists could ask THEIR patients to wear masks but otherwise it wouldn't be enforced. I exchanged some harsh words with our chiropractor about it (lol) and considered leaving the clinic over it, but ultimately our cool provincial health officer decided to remove the masking requirement for healthcare workers a couple weeks later so it was moot.
Since then it's basically just been me plus one or two other therapists who've kept it up, everyone else has mostly dropped it. To the clinic owner's credit she HAS kept providing masks for free, and we've had HEPA-filter air circulators in all the treatment rooms since November 2021.
However, I've noticed that over the past, oh, month or so, masks have been creeping back onto the faces of several other therapists and reception staff - not all the time, but definitely when they've been recovering from illness or suspect they might've been exposed to something. I can't be sure, but I'd like to believe a not-insignificant part of the reason for that is the fact that my permanently-masking ass has remained in perfect respiratory health while the chiropractor has a persistent cough you can hear through two closed doors
