is that thing in Doctor Who were someone goes off on a rant about how incredible/godlike/dangerous/cool/invincible the Doctor is a recent development (like...10th Doctor forward) or older

Because every time i get the urge to watch Doctor Who i get to an episode where someone goes 'DONT YOU UNDERSTAND WHO HE IS, HE'S THE GOD DAMN JOKER AND BATMAN ROLLED INTO ONE, HE'S DEATH AND LIFE, HE'S HOPE, HE'S FEAR, HE EATS DANGER AND SHITS INTRIGUE, HE'S THE ONLY MAN WHO FUCKS WITH HIS SOCKS ON' and i roll my eyes so hard they fall out of my head and close the DVD player window

🔔 It is DISTINCTLY a recent thing. The 1st through 9th were generally just... people. Extraordinary people, but people who had foibles and faults and made mistakes and also weren't that famous because most of the people they meet die or they time travel away. The 10th Doctor is really where the endless fucking diegetic fellatio of the Doctor as a sort of ubermenschian god-icon begins, and it's fucking DREADFUL.

i was at the perfect age to like the 11th Doctor at first and then i went back and watched his debut episode again recently and i found it honest to god irritating as hell

🔔 I compare and contrast the 9th Doctor sullenly declaring "Last of the Time Lords. I win." and stalking off to mope after actually finding empathy for what was at the time the last Dalek and realizing he'd lost the only other being left who could really understand what the Time War took from him... to fucking, all the faffing about nonsense and "I AM THE ONCOMING STORM" bullshit that started with the 10th, and I feel like something was conclusively lost inside the soul of the series.

i mean it SOUNDS like it became a show about its own legacy, which is always kind of a bad slope to start down. and it taints things like Doctors 13 and 14 because they don't feel like their own characters when they're introduced, they just feel more than ever like...ambassadors for the brand of Doctor Who. This becomes something the actor then has to actively FIGHT AGAINST.

it's very funny that i got inspired to watch it because of the MTG Commander sets, which are both things i pine for nostalgically and then try to re-engage with and then just wind up sad and annoyed
