fast car is like the siren song of covers. its so tender, almost dreamlike in its tragedy, the lyrics so immediate and delicate that a billion indie musicians stir at just me talking about it, begging to give it their sadboy touch. but you cant. youre not tracy chapman.
the irony is only worsened by jim o rourke's cover being actually ascendant, and its a cover he personally dislikes, finding the use of fast car almost placeholder, which is INSANE TO ME. the drone bleeding in feels like seasons, years, decades lost to you and this quiet fate. only for it to come back. a ringing reminder waking you from the dream,
"you gotta make a decision, to leave tonight or you can die this way." all-timer moment in music.
and jim doesnt like it.
xiu xiu's cover is also godlike but thats because jamie stewart's career is dedicated to somehow continually making more and more Real fast cars. hes lived a thousand fast cars. unlimited fast car works.
