"What's Freespace?"

Freespace, or as it's marketed, Descent: Freespace - The Great War, and its sequel Freespace 2, are a series of 1998-1999 space combat simulators developed by Volition, after branching off from Parallax Software and their work on the Descent series, though the games themselves are not considered part of the Descent canon. Though it takes inspiration from Wing Commander and TIE Fighter for its flight sim models rather than going for newtonian physics, Freespace opts for a more story-driven and less arcade-y experience, with a big appeal being its inspiration from Star Wars, Ender's Game and the space battles of sci-fi anime, complete with the plot, scale and stakes of some of the best in the genre.
