*like, two of them. but still

played both zombie revenge and night slashers with @SpikeBelfrey, both of which i hadn't played to completion until then, so i have some thoughts!

Zombie Revenge boxart

Zombie Revenge

I smell evil.

  • Good ol' HOTD2-style hamminess. Cutscenes are unintentionally hilarious, though there is reason to believe the game doesn't take itself too seriously, as well. I mean, you can literally grab guitar cases concealing weapons, Desperado style.
  • Game is a beat-em-up but it really, REALLY wants you to use ranged weapons wherever possible, like more so than Capcom's AvP (which, for context, is my favorite beat-em-up in the arcades). You always have a basic handgun, and chances are you'll be using these more than your fists. You can theoretically run out of bullets, but the game feeds you so many from playing the game that you'd be hard pressed to reach this point.
  • Enemies are...pretty damn tanky, even after you fill 'em will lead. No amount of shotguns, landmines, or DRILLS can compare to the health each generic zombie has.
  • Health pickups are practically non-existent, even when you search for the secret areas, which leads me to my biggest complaint...

POISON.

POISON

  • See that gross looking overlay on top of the health? That's your POISON gauge. Every attack infects you with poison. The more Poison you've accumulated, the more vulnerable you become, which can result in you getting hit by longer combos, taking more damage (i think) and moving slower. This is a big deal because attacks, which already do a lot of damage at a time, can just make you snowball into an early grave. Death is common, and I wouldn't want to play this game with limited credits because of that fact, let alone attempt a 1cc.

To quote Spike, this game "sucks good". There are a lot of things that made me throw my hands up and go "come on, man." but the hamminess and charm of the game kept us going strong. The voice acting and absurdity is more than enough to keep you entertained with a friend on board.

Night Slashers title screen

Night Slashers

Time to clean it up!

  • A Data East beat-em-up with fairly typical mechanics for a game of its time. You've got your basic jumps, attack strings, charge attacks, grabs, and running. You can also pull off a powerful screen nuke for a good chunk of your health (a worthy sacrifice. unlike the previous game, night slashers is rather sane with resupplying health)
  • All the craziness, humor and edge of a comic book, or an action-y horror flick like Evil Dead 2. Scathing one-liners, wacky ass bosses, plenty of times that made me say out loud: "THIS GAME RULES, ACTUALLY"
  • Characters feel unique enough from each-other, and there's also team attacks you can pull off, as if the fighters weren't impressive enough by themselves.
  • On the default settings, enemies hit hard. It doesn't take long for your health to diminish if you're not careful. It's nothing super frustrating, especially when playing casually, but it's enough to give me pause. I suspect that lowering the difficulty would mitigate this.
  • Game's pretty brisk, unlike Zombie Revenge. It definitely didn't overstay its welcome.

Overall, I walked out of this game with a much sweeter taste in my mouth. There was plenty of shared laughs to be had, it controlled nicely (in spite of my arcade stick's LP button sticking!) and I never felt like the game was really busting our chops.

Good ass game.

night slasher was pretty surprisingly good feeling, and zombie revenge is one of those games that makes you think "they really could have something here...!"
it's funny how they both happen to be in the (prolly) small rabbit hole of horror-themed beat-em-ups, and also coincidentally have two characters who speak only english and another who doesn't but it's fine
