This is mainly my experiences lately with FFXIV but it's certainly not exclusive to there, I'm just getting the overbearing impression from others that if you aren't playing your class in a very prescriptivist way and maximizing your efficiency you're viewed as a drag on any party activity and it saps all the fun out of it and becomes increasingly off-putting to deal with other players and the game(s) as a whole for it.

I should probably just take a break from MMOs in general.

Yeah this is why I stay away from all high end content when playing ff14. It feels a lot like if you're not 100% optimized at all times and don't have the best in slot gear (even if the high end content is where you GET the BiS gear) then you'll just get harassed out of the party.

Yeah I was enjoying the aesthetics and the story but seeing how complicated it was gonna get, mechanically, was really off-putting. The idea of getting into a group situation where people were relying on my competence seemed like the complete opposite of fun to me

This is, indeed, why I burned out on WoW - my reflexes just suck too much to Maximize Efficiency in any kind of high-end challenging content, such that I was necessarily forced to feel like a burden on my friends who wanted to do challenge modes, raid achievements, etc. (Or in the alternative, feeling patronized by them including me only if they so overpowered the content that my B+ at best performance didn’t make it impossible.)
