happy monday! it’s time for your July 2024 financial update.

before we start, we had two releases on Friday that we’d like you to be aware of:

  • we’ve released updates to our community guidelines related to our “missing stair” policy, as well as changes to our rules around AI-generated content. please be aware of them.
  • we’ve launched tag synonyms and are working hard on handling everyone’s requests. we’re having to develop some of our policy around what does and doesn’t get merged on the fly (there’s a lot of edge cases!) so it’s taking us some time to get through the queue, but we’re doing our best to keep up.

now then, on to the numbers:

in reply to @staff's post:

they explained it in the post:

as was mentioned in past financial updates, it took a bit for our expenses to fully stabilize due to additional expenses around fundraising. this is where we expect it to stabilize.

their expenses in the past few months have not been representative of their average expenses. they said it was due to additional expenses around fundraising. idk if that means needing to pay for additional lawyers or paying for certain non-recurring things early because they finally had the money for it but regardless, they’ve been saying this about their expenses the whole time.

we have a lot of annual renewals in late-June / early-July, lining up with when we originally launched publicly.

the spike in revenue is because a lot of people’s annual subscriptions renew at the same point in time. they point out this is because cohost launched at that time, so that was when a lot of people started paying as soon as they started using cohost. i anticipate that next year we’ll see a smaller spike maybe during the month that the anonymous funder disappeared, since users started a big fundraising campaign then.

Thanks for the financial corner.
I'm not sure where to request it, so I'm going to say it once again:
Do you think there could also be a public acknowledgment type post about the racism thing which kaara commented on here? I'm not meaning this in the "look I have dirt on you!!!!!!" way obviously, I'm meaning that, being transparent about the fact that this happened and acknowledging it wasn't good and was cowardly would honestly make me respect Staff more. https://cohost.org/renkotsuban/post/6857056-since-posting-this-o

You don't need my permission to talk about me, I requested that folks refrain from talking about me because I was inundated with messages from people hearing about this stuff second- or third-hand and preferred that people not do things like spread my writings offsite which was contributing to this.

"People who were part of those discussions on racism have my permission to talk about me"

Sounds like it implies other people don't - as in it is something that needs to be granted.

I'm not saying you're wrong, or I even have a horse in this race, but the wording isn't great. As in, if someone was going to talk about you - this would probably only feed that fire more.

Like how Prince Harry is always in the media to tell everyone he wants to avoid the media kinda thing.

Sometimes it's just better to let the dust settle and not ask people to not stir up the dust - because love doing what they're told not to do.

I mean I'm talking about you right now - and I've only learnt of this whole thing like 6 hours ago.

This whole exchange is why I (rather naively) requested that people not bring me or my deleted posts up because I don't need people learning about me/this whole thing, I shall take your advice into consideration and reword that portion since clearly it is not doing a good enough job establishing the boundary that I would like to set re: discussion of me appearing under e.g. @staff posts

Very normal response.

You even acknowledge that you're not involved, so then why did you not listen to yourself and stop replying? Why write this long-winded thing with some stupid analogy?

Learn to stop commenting. It's free.

Thank you for you kind words, you're truly helping.

My point was, telling people not to say anything will probably give the opposite effect (using myself as an example).

The main difference is I'm not going to go talking on external sites about it - it was simply an observation. I've not even touched on the topic at hand, I'm not kicking up dust about it.

Maybe try not to meet every comment with hostility in a topic about inclusion?

"Learn to stop commenting. It's free."

Considering how bizarrely hostile and deeply unnecessary this comment was I'd advise you to follow your own advice in the future.
