One, maybe-but-doubtful more unique issue for me is thinking too hard while playing fighting games.

What does this look like?

It's effectively the reverse of flowcharting.

one of the reasons that now i'm mixing casual matches back into my gameplan for street fighter 6 is that they remind me to "play loose" so that I can carry that into ranked play or just playing in general. i may make more mistakes when i play loose but i'm less likely to completely lock my brain down when I need to be awake.

sajam kinda talks about what I mean when I say "play loose" in this video here (warnings for casual ableism) --

and watching it reminded me that the most important thing in fighting games is similar to the most important thing in martial arts -- you have to be ready to move but not stiff or tense.

things I say a lot when I'm playing and feeling myself lock up:

  • I'm thinking too hard
  • I'm anticipating too much

are pretty much rooted exactly in what Ryyudo is getting at in their post. the idea that you have to always be playing cleanly and precisely to clutch out a w...sometimes, no, that's not the shit to do at all. sometimes you just get a little feral, a little brazen, and hop to it.

I wish I could make Sin burn calories by putting him in blockstun and running mixups...

Good read! I think it's common to see people, even at high levels, start to overthink and run into decisions paralysis or go too hard down the "I have THE READS" path line. Sometimes you just gotta start from the fundamentals and build from there.

Well first, Sin needs to get out of his terminal himbo status and start thinking about his future! Learning his times tables!

Appreciate hearing that from you most notably, as you were a bigger recent "inspiration" to keep things simple. Still remembering the advice you gave to another Jam player about approaching Faust at Frosty's "Just keep going in, if you land a hit you'll get a bunch of damage. What's Faust going to do? f.S?"

And I'm mentally sweating from the corner "Oh.... oh fuck he's right."
