it's1 just another name for canola! teach people that it's canola! it's cognate with rapa, latin for "turnip"! because canola, like mustard greens, kale, broccoli, cabbage, brussels sprouts, basically every other edible plant on earth2, is a brassica! and brassicas are great
basically; "canola" is a proprietary name invented by the Rapeseed Association of Canada for a particular improved type of oil rapeseed, hence Can-ola

Of course, it's worth noting that, iirc, part of the reason the Rapeseed Association of Canada invented that proprietary name is because customers were hesitant to buy "rapeseed oil"
yeah, 100%! it's not a great name, but it's one that still gets used especially in non-american cooking
