So, uh hey! This year, I got VVVVVV professionally localised into 20 languages as part of an open source effort to update the game. If you happen to speak any of those languages, I would REALLY, REALLY love to hear from you.

You can opt in to the "2.4-beta" branch on Steam right now, and play the game in any of the following languages:

  • Catalan
  • Welsh
  • German
  • Esperanto
  • Spanish
  • French
  • Irish
  • Italian
  • Japanese
  • Korean
  • Dutch
  • Polish
  • Brazilian Portuguese
  • European Portuguese
  • Russian
  • Silesian
  • Turkish
  • Ukrainian
  • Chinese (Simplified)
  • Chinese (Traditional)
  • (more potentially in future updates?!)

Seriously, any feedback at all about the localisations is really welcome - you can just message me directly here, or email me (https://distractionware.com/email/), or open an issue on the github (https://github.com/TerryCavanagh/VVVVVV/issues), and I'll discuss it with our translators. Thanks!

in reply to @terrycavanagh's post:

Brazilian Portuguese:

  • "A sala sensível" is a false cognate of The Sensible Room, should be "A sala sensata"
  • "carew" is in lowercase
  • "Brass sent us over the top" translates "Brass" as the metal, instead of the military slang

no errors in Tower and conveyor belt areas, more later

Played through and could only find two more i'm sure of:

  • Vertigo translates correctly, but the movie had a different title in PT-BR: "Um Corpo Que Cai"
  • In the cutscene where Viridian goes missing, "Welcome back" is not gendered correctly to the last rescuee.

I'm noticing some issues with the Spanish translation. It's Iberian (European) Spanish, for one, and I know they have a very different way of speaking the language, but... the initial area has some lines that seem to be missing context, or just don't have the right tone.

I played through VVVVVV years ago and the lines currently in the game just don't sound right.

I don't want to sound like a know it all, far from it, but this language in particular may need a lookover by a script editor.

Hey! Thanks, this is a good data point! I'll be talking to our translator Felipe next week once we've gathered more feedback.

In the meantime, some specific examples of things that sound off to you would be really useful. (just to check, you're coming at this from a latin american spanish perspective, I'm assuming?)

Amazing! I've been poking away at a bengali language translation for pokemon fire red for years (I'll probably never finish since I'm just doing the script and have no actual romhacking abilities) but I always love to see games make it into more languages and maybe one day vvvvvv will be in bengali :)

aside from feedback for these languages, is there a way to contribute for a new language? we're considering that we would pitch in to a Filipino (Tagalog) translation, if there's enough interest, is all ^___^
