I just understood why there are no comment likes.

It encourages dialogue for the sake of dialogue. There is literally no concept of a ratio on cohost. So there's no dunking for points. No cheap spite based dopamine infusion. It's part of the design that's fostering good faith discussion here, and I love that.

It's one of the reasons why I'm leaning more and more towards not seeing numbers being a good thing, because the people who interact on my posts want to, and aren't motivated by a large number that says 'everyone else is, so you should too'. Or more specifically 'hey if you disagree with this, you can comment and 'prove' via more likes and replies that you are right and this person you've never spoken to once in your life is wrong.'

Couple that with no algorithm driven suggestions and you notice scrolling a full feed of updates isn't that bad, it's all stuff you actively follow and can opt in/out of posting on without fomo.

Another thing is that it can discourage the courtesy/compulsory like, that showed that someone saw your post. Replies mean so much more here if someone responds to your post, because it means you hit on something, or gave them an idea they want to expand on, or disagree with and can say it in more than 240 characters.

I personally think comment likes but only the person who the comment is directed at can leave them, would be the best compromise. It would be an easy, non-committal way for someone to show they read and appreciated a comment even if there isn't much room for further reply, they aren't feeling up to replying, etc.

Having it so nobody unrelated to the comment can like would still eliminate "dunking for likes," while giving a nice way to tell people you like the cut of their jib.

I've suggested something like a "seen" option. Somethings that's just "Hey, I saw this." Because there are a lot of times I want to show acknowledge, but I don't want to have it in my "Like feed".

Another thing: something I just want to save something to read later. So something I can "tag" a post with would be cool.

See, I like the extra effort involved in making it a conversation. We can normalize actually saying, as a comment on a comment, "I agree" or "I like the way you think even if I don't fully agree" or "that's hilarious" or whatever we actually meant by the like button.

Not everyone always has it in them to make a conversation out of something, especially if it's someone that gets a lot of comments regularly. They can't respond to everyone, but they can easily give people a quick "hey good comment" with a single click.

It just goes to show: technology is not neutral. It is designed by people for a purpose, and it accomplishes a purpose which may or may not be what the people say or think they designed it for (but which also exists for a reason that comes from human actions).

I definitely appreciate the lack of numbers. On Twitter or Facebook I felt the impulse to share things that were making me mad to try to get favorites or likes. There's less incentive for that kind of drive-by commentary here. Instead I wait until I have something actually thoughtful to say.

The fact that the owners are happy to kick out bad actors (TERFs, Nazis, etc) also helps keep this a pleasant place to hang out too, of course, and the fact that it's a smaller crowd.
