I'm interested in Layton the most and it's not even close.

After the painful disappointment Lady Layton was, a very "Thanks! I hate it," game for me, I worried that the Layton series wouldn't get another chance.

Yet, here we are!

Admittedly a little disappointed they didn't continue (at least afaik yet) with Katrielle I'm h*ckin jazzed at getting more Whoa, Cool Puzzle! content.

Here's to hoping they solved their sticking points since!

I really hope this ends up good - really glad the series is getting another shot after Millionaire's Conspiracy. I happened to be taking a flight the day that one released on 3DS and I was so excited to kill the time with it, and it was just... so very much not what I was hoping it'd be. Nervously optimistic they can course correct with this new one 🙏

Biiiiiig same, fam! Funnily enough, I think I also grabbed Millionaire's Conspiracy on release right before a trip and that became a longer flight than it should have been...

Let's hope the S.S. Optimistic doesn't sink 😭 I feel they can at least get the story aspects corrected.

They unfortunately did. :(

Without getting too longpost-y on you, or just in case you want to evacuate from any potential spoilers now (you kinda just gotta play it to understand it IMO), the major issues for me were:

  • It's episodic (not a huge deal but...)
  • The episodes are all the same lighthearted "Oops haha" and "It's not actually an issue" surrounding a specific cast of characters that I do not care for (rich people).
  • The one actually-maybe, Layton-esque deep mystery is basically ignored and remains as a repeated joke that wears out its welcome.
  • The puzzle quality takes a steep decline due to the passing of their "Puzzle Master." There's one particularly bad puzzle that caught the ire of more than myself, I've come to discover.

That's a big shame. I hope the next one is a return to form for fans then. I never got too deep into Layton. I think I only engaged with the first two or three and then the Layton x Ace Attorney spin off. But, I know people love it and I want them to continue loving it.

If you're interested in more Katrielle content without... the unfortunate bad-ness of her game, they did make a 50(!) episode anime starring her (Japan only, and afaik it's not on any streaming services). Layton and Luke also show up in it as well.
