its kind of wild how no matter what shit nintendo tries to pull there continues to be effortless hype and fanboyism about anything and everything they announce

microsoft and sony's fanboy barriers have been getting beat down continuously by their studio closures and questionable business practices / purchases, and i was seeing many articles about their bullshit during their press conferences

nintendo? nothing but positive news and hype despite their recent relentless dmca'ing

it kind of feels like it doesnt matter what nintendo can do, because unlike microsoft and sony, nintendo can just consistently make good games and that makes everybody forget everything theyve done. we'll happily erase all the DMCA'd fan games, albums, artwork, the sites and emulators they've taken town, the people they've sent to prison, because they just announced metroid prime 4 guys omg

and idc if this gets me flak from friends, your relationship with nintendo and their properties deserves some self critique and reflection if you truly believe what else nintendo is doing isn't right, just like every other company you refuse to support or pirate products from. nintendo isnt a special case because they made pikachu

ur so fucking based for this bestie
I hate how people will be wilfully ignorant over big corpo company 1 because muh vidogames!!!!!!! like yes they DO make good games, but that doesnt mean I cant be critical over the constantly bullshit they pull.

I will use an emulator tho to enjoy the games >:3

At this point I think Nintendo could announce that they have to harm an endangered species of animal en masse to flavor switch carts and no one would care. News could come out that their internal devs work 100 hour weeks and no one would care. They could lay off half of staff and no one would care. Just squeeze the IP tube a bit and everyone stays happy.

"Now, Nintendo seems to hate palworld at the moment, so maybe I'll get a copy of that..."

If TOTK feels soulless and empty to you, then Palworld will feel so much worse, it's the most basic and formulaic open-world survival crafting game imaginable with some overly simple (gameplay-wise) and uncreative Pokémon clones attached

This isn't to defend Nintendo or anything (not that I think Pokémon is one of the worse things they do anyway), it's just that this game has always been massively overhyped, not to mention that it's one of those "permanently Early Access" games too from a studio with a history of that

I guess I don't really use any social media but I haven't really been seeing much of any people that are looking foward to Nintendo games or upcoming ones also acting like Nintendo does no wrong or not complaining about these issues lately. Somebody can be excited for a game from a company but loathe their existence/what they do outside of making games.

I think we are starting to phase out the fanboy to speific gaming consoles or at least it seems to have reduced lately. Maybe this is more common for people that don't follow gaming news as much. I wonder did Atlus cool down on the DMCA's for streaming their games with P3 Reloaded and SMT VV. I am guessing probably not much.

Still I do kinda feel like its hard to care much about AAA games regardless when you have so much indies games in nearly every genre of very high quality fun fresh games every week nearly now to try out. I only really got Unicorn Overlord this year so far for a 2024 AAA game and Prince of Persia Lost Crown and thats it so far.

Honestly it feels like the double standard of how people treat nintendo vs microsoft/sony is because unfortunately most people care about game quality over ethics, and it's that microsoft/sony's "true" sin is that their unethical behavior tends to directly impact the quality of their games in a way that nintendo's unethical behavior doesn't

How does "taking full advantage of a copyright system that society put into place well before they came along" at all compare with "buying up tons of studios and then shutting them down when they couldn't get an investment from Saudi Arabia"? How does "we still have all the team members from Super Mario working on Super Mario Wonder 38 years later" compare with "HiFi RUSH was a break out hit for us and our players in all key measurements and expectations, we need more games like that, while shutting down the studio that made it, despite our gaming revenue continuing to grow 5% year over year"? I can go on. Nintendo is a ruthless business with a team of unhinged lawyers, and while I'll be the first to admit "not literally illegal" is the kind of bare minimum moral standard that made the pandemic hundreds of times worse than it should have been, "thrashing around the whole industry with all their money and destroying some studios outright while strangling the games from the studios you do allow to survive with terrible management decisions" is much much worse.

edit: and for what it's worth I haven't bought a Nintendo game since Tears of the Kingdom, which I never finished lol (though to be fair, I took longer to beat BotW, there's still a decent chance I'll come back to it, I don't finish games quickly pretty much ever). I might pick up Echoes of Wisdom, we'll see.

So wait, my comment would be more acceptable in your eyes if I had come here to argue? I don't think maple's wrong, overall, no. Generally I'm fascinated by the discussion that came out of this. I'm not the kind of person who picks fights to win, if I thought this was dunkable I probably would have unfollowed, not commented. This is cohost after all, not Twitter lol

Edit: actually, though, maple's a sweetie and I love fragment so I wouldn't even unfollow for a dunkable take, honestly. But I wouldn't have commented, regardless

i'll note that i used these points about microsoft and sony mostly just because it's the latest thing that's being talked about regarding them right now, the initial post was made somewhat quick-fire and angrily so i didn't really think about it too deep

you are right in that microsoft and sony's transgressions are much more immediately damaging towards people, but i will also note that destroying the hard work of cover, fangame, fanart creators and archivists is pretty upsetting for both fans and the makers of these projects, and, in the cases of some specific DMCA takdowns, actively destructive towards the history of nintendo, so i think it's important to talk about

thank you for the kind words =^x^=

It clicked for me after starting on Nintendo as a kid, falling off, and trying to come back that the company is run by assholes who only care about their bottom line and actually kinda seem to hate their customers.

I bought a 3DS, and I had no money. I still basically have no money, but then I really had no money. I had to buy my games myself since I was 15 when I got my first official job literally the day I was legally able to. I only got to play games up into my mid 20s because I could trade things. It made that $30 used copy of something a much more palatable (when that was two-three hours of work) $15 used copy if I sacrificed a few things I'd already played to the pyre.

The problem? Nintendo games always cost MORE used than they did new, because Nintendo under produces demand of everything but the hardware so they don't have games sitting on shelves or inventory they need to buy back. It'd been why I stopped playing my GBA, my parents stopped buying me new Pokemon games in favor of letting me pick much cheaper PS2 games. I started to realize when I was a kid why we only owned a copy of Smash Bros and a couple other non-nintendo games for the N64.

I remember seeing a used copy of Ocarina for the 3DS for $70 like 3 years after it came out and realized that the rest of the first party used games for the 3DS were all the same, watching it never go on sale on digital, and thinking "oh shit, I'm never going to get another Nintendo game for this thing". I was right. I never did.

I can't rag on anyone that's happy to see new entries to their fav games but I do hope everyone is smarter about their purchases. Like many others, totk is probably the last game I get from nintendo.
I'm excited about it in the same way I'm excited to see a store close so I can pilfer the extreme clearance aisle. I'll probably play the games at some point, but not in a way that ever gives the company money tbh. 🏴‍☠️

->this is making me wonder what everyone is even going to Do once team cherry actually announces more silksong news/a release date. Because honestly mp4 and silksong were in a very similar boat in terms of "lol they're never gonna come out are they"

Maybe its just the circle of people I surround myself with but all my homies have a love hate relationship with Nintendo. They as a company have released some of the greatest games but then provide basically no good legal way to play or even experience their older properties. Rarely re-release older games and almost never put out the soundtracks, and if they do its Japan exclusive (which if it is CDs isn't the worst thing, just costs a ton), or they eventually take it down (Mario Odyssey had a sound select on iTunes but it just isn't there anymore).

This is why I hate Nintendo and just emulate all their games. I didn't buy Tears of the kingdom, I didn't buy thousand year door (the remake, I own the original physically, but it was bought second hand), and I won't be buying Prime 4 or the new Zelda game. Nintendo has lost my support despite me still loving their games. So I do what needs to be done.

in reply to @maple's post:

okay the fact they took down heaven studio is criminal, even putting aside all the stuff they've done before
that is a GAME that you AREN'T EVEN PROFITING ON because it's been EIGHT YEARS SINCE THE LAST GAME IN THE SERIES, AND IT'S ONLY ON A NOW-DEAD DEVICE IN TERMS OF MONEY

pirate nintendo games. do it. it's morally correct like adobe products.
