ive been very well aware of the writing on the wall for about two years now, so instead of the i-told-you-so, ill say to all the people i really enjoyed following:

please make your own blog. please make and link your own blog. dont just post a twitter or bluesky or mastodon link. i dont want to read your posts on tumblr or whatever. i want to read your posts on your own damn blog. you want to do css crimes, you can do as many as you want. hell, maybe ill put eggbugbox on my own site for old times sake.

this place had so much potential. its a shame the staff tried to apply an infinite growth startup mindset to what could have just been a nice low-stakes forever community run as a hobby, and then acted really weird about their financials, and also were totally gunning to allow lolicon that one time, and bizarrely decided not to work on becoming financially solvent for a really long time, and then just now decided to burn down the house just because they didn't personally want to live in it anymore.

i don't really need social media in my life. i've had a tumblr for over ten years where i just silently like and reblog stuff, and thats enough for me. but for just a little while, cohost was a nice place to check daily and read a few longposts, even if i wasn't willing to put my own eggs in this basket. i hope to see some of you elsewhere.

seeya.

in reply to @rosieposie's post:

I get this, but also some people here like myself rely on feeds from other websites for visibility. A blog separate from the outside internet doesn't make sense much for the content getting posted as you'll never be seen in the first place, except for relying on shares from those platforms.

if visibility is your concern, cohost was always second fiddle to something like tumblr or twitter anyway. its not like you could check your analytics or views. probably never going to beat that wildly high SEO though

that being said, even for the little daily post blogs like @objects, it wouldnt hurt to be on your own website, with full control over how your stuff is presented. ive seen people automatically mirror posts on their own site onto all their social medias, and i think that would always garner more views than just sticking to one.

cohost doesn't exist without full time work, let alone server/bandwidth costs. idk how you think this would exist as a hobby project.

like, listen. i think cohost should exist, with full-time, properly-compensated employees. that would be awesome!

but they didn't want to run ads, stripe never allowed tipping, adult content was never gonna fly with any payment processor, artist alley didn't make enough money, and cohost plus didn't have enough features to be worth it - they never could have made enough money for what they were paying themselves, but they were making enough to pay the server costs.

we don't live in an ideal world. we live in a capitalist one. their 'financial plan' was never going to work. the plan that does work is the hobbyist one. it sucks, its unfortunate, and i don't want it to be this way, but that's how it is.
