Overly Sarcastic Productions phrased things really well in a way that has stuck with me for a while:
A good sign of whether or not your Batman is being characterized properly is as follows: "Could you picture this Batman comforting a scared child?" If yes, congratulations! This is a certified Batman. If not, I'm afraid you instead have the Punisher in a silly hat.
And just like... every time I look at a version of Batman, the quote holds up so well.
