the more time goes on, the more i believe that the notion that game design is an empirical science we get better at through inquiry is dangerous nonsense. you'd find it pretty weird to say "if we're not making better movies/books/music/painting/sculptures/etc than we did 15+ years ago, what the fuck are we even doing here?" so why would you say it about games? the truth is that the ratio of good art to mediocre art being produced is pretty much constant.
Yeah, most days I agree with this 100%.
But sometimes I see listicles of Best Games and they're all like, 30 years old or whatever and I get baited.
yeah i mean its the same with lists of albums or movies or books. it takes time to build a reputation as one of The Best. its hard to know right after something comes out if it's gonna be something people are talking about in 30 years.
When I was in school I had a rule that I wouldn't read any books that were less than 10 years old because that would filter out anything bad-but-trendy. It /sorta/ worked.
I'm pretty sure I was insufferable tbh.
honestly i basically do this now. i usually don't read books that came out in like... the 21st century (i'm not super picky about it though). i always wait a month before i play a new video game everyone's talking about because 99% of the time everyone just stops talking about it by then.
In a similar vein once I stopped engaging with the Discourse I've been able to play a lot more games that are Actually Good, and less that are just Big On Twitter.
As it turns out, the 3DS' library is still good as hell and you can find some absolute bangers for the system on the internet
i hacked my 3ds over christmas and man what a good decision. there are so many kick ass 3ds and ds games
I've maintained for years that the DS library is as strong as the PS2 and SNES'.
Shame Nintendo wants us all to forget about it though.
