The horrors beyond human comprehension are probably more a vehicle for the gay, if that helps get you interested.
Also, if you watch the anime adaption, the reception of it wasn't nearly as positive as the novels or manga adaption, so I'd say don't let the anime shape your perception of the series too much. The anime does have some good stuff to it, though, imo.
