i'm awake at an obscene hour, so naturally i'm browsing marisa fanart, and there is a lot less than i expected that tries to add curves to marisa that she doesn't have, which is really nice to see

like, she has damn near zero waist definition, her trunk into her legs is very square, and it's a very prominent thing about her body design and seeing fan artists keep the integrity of that honestly pretty specific choice given basically every other female character's design in street fighter to date is pretty nice

the ones that taper her abs or blow up her hips or whatever, they're not bad illustrations but i think missing that about her or deciding to change it skips over something kind of fundamental about her design, and i think it's a good bit of subtle character reinforcement too--everyone's different, but in somebody whose body is heavily muscular, i'd hazard a guess that one's obliques are unlikely to be that similar in size to their lats without serious, dedicated development, development that people who want waist definition would try to diminish or avoid

even if the character designers weren't thinking about the specific implications of her waist : hip ratio here, i think it's reasonable to infer that marisa made a conscious choice to really build her obliques out, which slots right in with everything else we already know about her

and to me the great thing about it is that if they'd given her even a tiny bit of waist taper, a little bit more curve at the hip, i don't think anyone would have batted an eye or thought it was weird or out of place at all! nobody would have crowed "no way! marisa would clearly build her trunk to be perfectly thick and square!" but they still decided to take that slider to zero, and to me it just makes her go that little bit harder
