one of the contractors who put in a bid for our basement came in really low on permit costs, and i asked them what was up with that and they very casually informed me that they simply lie to the city on the permit application to avoid taxes

We were shopping roof quotes and one company came in $10k under; we were not wise enough to straight up ask "why" and instead confirmed that they were using the same process/technique, and materials, as the other companies and went with them. My spouse was dealing with them and told me later "every time I asked how he wanted to be paid he said 'cash is cash" which I thought meant pay however you want." No, they do cash only, because they don't pay sales tax lol. 🤷♂️
