*murphy's law was meant to be a guiding principle in design: e.g., don't make electrical plugs and sockets symmetrical, because if they get plugged in the wrong way, Bad Things™ happen, so it should be impossible to plug them in the wrong way, so a completely correct statement would include the disaster component, but i like this more general version better
