i wasn't expecting top quality, but it came in a literally unassembleable state
there is, for reasons i cannot explain, a plastic ring placed in each of the side panels for the little metal posts to screw into, but it was missing from one of the side panels
wayfair gave me two options:

replace the messed up panel (part ships by july 12 and arrives by july 17

a 25% discount to keep the item as-is
i accepted the discount because what i am going to do is grab an appropriately-sized wooden dowel from home depot, cut it down to size, drill a hole in the middle of it, and then glue it into the side panel. i can probably get away with using ca glue instead of wood glue for this
longer term i should build my own cabinet, but chopping hinge mortises is a little bit beyond me right now
