Marta beats Harlan at Go because she's not playing to win, she's playing to make a beautiful pattern. Ransom can also beat Harlan at Go, sometimes, but because Ransom is a lot like Harlan, he can't beat Harlan as often as Marta does. In the end, Marta is found to be innocent once she stops trying to do things Harlan's or Ransom's way and does things her own way instead. (And yes, I know this is extremely simplistic, but it's neat gosh darn it, I'm not a media critic lemme alone)
