• They/Them

A real "we've got a nephew" of graphic design and illustration, mental illness held at bay by a very nice vegetable garden and cats.

Lapsed printmaker, you should ask me about it and I'll be very weird

This is a test release of the mod I've been working on to get rid of the bright flashing that occurs whenever Cloud hits stuff with his sword in the PC release of Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade. This changes the particle effect to something that's much closer to how it looked in the original PS4 release.

Instructions for installation:

  • This mod is only for the PC/Steam/Epic release of Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade, no way to mod the console version, at least easily, sadly.

  • Once you've downloaded the .pak file, you need to go to where FF7R is installed on your computer. By default that would be C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE for Steam, and C:\Program Files (x86)\Epic Games\FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE for Epic.

  • Once there, you need to go to End\Content\Paks and create a new folder called ~mods. Simply drop the zParticleHitFix_v2.pak file into this folder and it should take effect when you launch the game. Very quick to confirm if it works since you just need to start hitting stuff with Cloud's sword. Especially easy to notice in the very first fight when you start a new game, since the lighting there is dark and makes the flash even more noticeable when it's present.

I'm pretty sure this should work regardless of what sword Cloud currently has equipped. It seems that they all use the same on-hit particle effect.

Let me know if this works for you, if you see any issues or bugs come up with it, or if you know of any other particle effects/explosions/whatever that have an extremely bright screen filling flash like this one. It was pretty easy to mod this one once I figured out what files I needed to alter, so doing it for other particle effects shouldn't be too hard.

This is just a test release of the mod I've been working on, but I hope it works for people! Please leave feedback!

I tried it on all swords to make sure and this works great! I think if you wanted to make the game fully safe for people with photo sensitivity, a lot more effects would need to be toned down. Most of the thunder effects on spells or enemies could use some tweaking. The Thundaga spell and the M.O.T.H. units when they start charging a lot of energy are the first one that come to mind. If I do another full playthrough in the future I'll try to keep note of all the ones I spot. Cloud's sword one was definitely the worst one though with how much it happens constantly, so this is a great start.

I think I remember seeing the glowy wisps that follow you when you have the Refocus limit break active flashing really aggressively, too. I'm taking a look at the files for some of these effects and I think I'm tracking down the texture masks I'll need to edit to fix them. Hoping to test in the next day or two.
