what's worth noting -- and what pushed me over the edge -- is if you have a year subscription they refund the part of the year you hadn't used yet. since i only bought the subscription a couple months ago that ended up being pretty significant.
i wanted to get a year subscription first but at this point it's pretty clear that their method works for me and i'm gonna keep using it. the lifetime subscription isn't cheap but if it takes me more than like 2 years to finish it (seems likely) it'll have been worth it.
plus the company behind them (tofugu) seems nice. all the stuff they put out for free on their main website is pretty great too. and wanikani support has been good so far too -- every time i've reported something i've gotten a reply the next working day and it's gotten fixed within days
