• They/Them

A real "we've got a nephew" of graphic design and illustration, mental illness held at bay by a very nice vegetable garden and cats.

Lapsed printmaker, you should ask me about it and I'll be very weird

Finally sat down to plan out the garden space and goddamn I'm so excited. Also scared. But excited! The vertical gardens on the left are all in a row, I just stacked them like this to make it more compact. I think I have all of the companion plants next to each other? The brussels being there might be a problem, as they'll be a bit harder to cover and keep out moths. Any circles just floating out in the aether are designated for little fabric pots.

The real kicker is this layout is asking me to create six different trellises, which uhhhh, I hope I have the cash for (irrigation system will just have to wait until next year). The trellises will either be frames with string either woven or with eye hooks, or cattle panels. I have a fucked up looking A frame planned for the tomatoes. If I'm outta cash, it'll be a simple Florida weave and we'll see how well it plays with bigger tomatoes.

The other blind spot is that a couple of these are early spring crops - things like radishes and cauliflower - and will have pretty big bare spots when they're harvested. Maybe the cantaloupe and cucumbers will just fill in?

...I should make room for more tomatoes...

I just ordered SO MANY GODDAMN SEEDS, honestly too many for the space I have but I couldn't make up my mind. Ordered seeds from Johnny's Seeds, Gurney's, and Baker's/Rare Seeds. Plus I bought some flower seeds, and a giant packet of bergamot for the bees! I'm going to try and use a bunch of those little cloth pots to put pollinator favorites around the edges of the garden.

Next tasks on the list include:

  • Quote out and have more soil and compost delivered
  • Placement, and working in crop rotation for the older beds
  • Figure out what can be trellised and best way to do so
  • Find a place that sells bamboo not for $6 a pole go fuck yourselves
  • Ways to make container plants more successful (different soil mixes? layering?)
  • Best way to build a more permanent watering system
  • Request a chipdrop and hope for the best lol
  • Price out building a fence (might be out of budget this year, especially since I'm adding 4 more beds)
