Anonymous User asked:

what makes a good speedrun game for new runners?

That's really all you need for a speedrun game to be good for anyone tbh - and for new runners (either to the specific game, or to speedrunning in general) the resources for the game - route notes, trick tutorials, practice ROMs, etc - are kind of the end-all-be-all. I can't tell you the number of games I've wanted to pick up but decided to not play because in order to have any notes I'd have to watch through the world record and take notes just on what I can see. (It's at least one)

Of course, that answer is more aimed at established community people who want to attract more new runners - if you're a new runner looking for a good first game, my suggestion is to just.... pick a game you think would be fun to play a bunch - either because you love the game and want excuses to play it over and over, or you saw a marathon run that looked sick, or you want to justify a steam sale purchase. Different people like different things from their runs - I really love menuing and games with a fair bit of RNG, and for the most part I don't like a lot of action games or platformers. Other people have the EXACT opposite opinions in general, and sometimes even games that look exactly like your game have elements that are just rough to run.

Picking a speedgame to start isn't a commitment by any stretch - getting started, learning what you like, what you don't, what general stuff out there is will help you find the speedgames you'll love!

(also if anyone wants more specific recommendations, send me an ask with ideas of the kinds of games you think would be interesting!)
