cohost patch notes vol. 68

happy friday! we held off on patch notes this week so that we could line them up against a major feature release that was just about ready to go.

Audio uploads!!!

You can now upload audio files to posts!!
- attach them the same way you would an image (clicking the paperclip icon in the toolbar or dragging and dropping)
- we support MP3, AAC, WAV, and FLAC
  - sorry OGG likers. we don’t do any transcoding for audio on the server, and it’s not supported in safari so we’re not shipping it for now.
    - colin’s a [clears throat] Vorbis liker too and he’s not thrilled about having to leave it out either, but only about 80% of users could play it, compared to 95%+ for these formats.
- file size limits are the same as for images; 10mb for cohost plus subscribers, 5mb for everyone else

This has been on our Desired Feature List since before launch, and we’re glad we finally had the time to make it happen. This is phase one of our efforts to rework and improve media attachments overall. Please let us know if you have any feedback!

Here’s what else is new this week:

Improved performance on the bookmarked tag feed
- the queries that generate this feed are, unfortunately, slow. we think there’s still some performance to gain without completely rearchitecting how feed generation works, but we’re calling this good enough for now.
improved caching for RSS/Atom/json feeds (which had shockingly slow generation)
- we’ve got more performance improvements we want to make here, but this is a good band-aid solution for now
Fixed a bug where pages that had responded to asks needed manual work to be deleted
Adjusted ordering for tag and project search
- we’re still using the number of posts a tag has been used in and the number of followers a project has to help with sorting, but we’re placing less emphasis on it now.

That’s all for this week! Unfortunately for those keeping track of the count, we don’t think next week’s patch notes are going to be very exciting; we’ve got multiple big projects in progress. Hopefully we can have something more exciting in 352 weeks.

As far as I'm aware you'll also need to specify the HTML audio source type as audio/caf; codecs=opus. I did some experimenting in the past and found it also wouldn't work without this?

I love that opus works on every browser natively now except Safari. Thanks Apple, for Thinking Different™...

For what it's worth, there's good web-based MOD players out there already that could be implemented! webaudio-mod-player is one I've been most impressed with, it seems rock solid.

There's a pretty egregious outstanding issue with anonymous asks, where they put a number badge on your inbox but simply can't be viewed. It's honestly shocking to me that there isn't more outcry, and that this hasn't been fixed for so long. Someone asked me something well over two weeks ago and I still don't know what it is!!!

Can we please get a fix for this?

i've had this issue since asks were launched and it still hasn't been fixed! there's at least one other support thread about it too. logged out asks just do not show up whatsoever. super annoying because the notifications for them won't go away, but they don't show up in my inbox!!

i get that that issue is frustrating, but posting demands like this in the patch notes comments section doesn't get it closer to being done, it just makes the staff more stressed out. They read every report in the support forums, so they'll definitely do it as soon as they can figure out the exact cause! It looks like it's only hitting a small number of users considering how few upvotes that gets, so it's probably a lot more complicated than it seems.

I understand where you're coming from, but I don't really agree. For one, posting here already got a really nice outcome — a staff member confirmed that they're working on it, which they hadn't done in the support forum.

Second, a lot more users read these posts than read the support forum. By letting people know that there's a place to vote and comment, staff can get a clearer picture of how many people this affects.

I hate to also piggyback a complaint/request on here, but I do find the omission of a volume control a drawback to the current implementation, and wonder if adding one might be feasibile in future. Such a bother when websites make me adjust system- or app-level volume so as not to get blasted (then adjust it back when finished).

Oh no wait I have feedback. I realize that it would not actually prevent anyone from downloading the file, but it would be nice if there were the option to disable the download button. It might additionally offer some level of plausible deniability should any legal challenges arise.

so glad to see audio posting finally supported! a little bit of feedback to offer:

the upload limit feels a little too restrictive without resorting to some very crunchy bitrates, and highly limits what someone can do with wav and flac. i think 10mb for free users should be the minimum, as i prefer to target v0 mp3 quality when sharing things and at best i can offer either very small clips or very crunchy clips, neither of which is the most fun

secondly, i'll add in my want for a built-in volume slider to the player. i tend to wear headphones a lot and prefer not to have to clumsily adjust my browser's volume if something is coming in a little hotter than expected
