just saw a youtube vid in my recommends that was called something like 'in defense of steven universe' and i dunno if its any good as a video but i immediately thought of @sarahzedig 's INCREDIBLE post about queer wish fulfillment and parental death in SU - this hunk here of second paragraph is the thing i think of every time i see someone make a video titled something like that or "was steven universe BAD actually??" or anything along those lines:

has the culture turned in such a way that "we" have decided it was bad? i feel like i keep seeing people "defend" steven universe in a conspicuously, uh, well, defensive way, against a bunch of haters i rarely see, and i just can't tell if that's because people actually hate the show now or what. maybe it's just that folks had issues with the ending, issues with the movie, then issues with su future, and since that was the most recent canonical conversation it's the one that dominates our collective memory.

it's a banger hunk of text in a post that is entirely spot on, and it's what my mind goes to now whenever i see shit like that

in reply to @gull's post:

The problem is that the discourse got infected with a lot of Bad Actors as the shows were wrapping up so you had stuff like the EZPZ and Lily Orchard videos where they ended up perpetuating some extremely Bad Vibes and Bad Faith criticisms of the show (None of which I can say here because they're some Capital Letter Content Warnings and a lot of slurs/edgy """"jokes""""). Don't get me wrong, the show has flaws, but those videos say/insinuate some really horrendous shit about everyone involved in the project.

The reason fans nowadays are so defensive is because any amount of discourse isn't outside places like here is basically akin to flipping a Fear And Hunger coin and risking someone barreling in that at best is gonna be repeating those Bad Faith arguments or at worst post those shitty anti-Steven memes/troll art/shitposts acting like they're some sort of "gotcha".

I agree there is such thing as being too defensive but on the other hand i don't really blame them after having to deal with years of that bullshit.

that's fair, that's fair, and that shit Sucked absolutely. it all just seems... strange, now being Multiple Years out from all three finales, y'know? like... the show is over. it's been over. it feels like it should have long since been enough time for the Lily Orchard-class shitstorms to lapse into the background and the need to Defend to have gone with it.

but i dont know. i dont spend much time in circles where such things get hotly contested. figured itd be bad to dip in or something

Well they do say hate is burning hot, and in this case theres a lot of embers still burning in some places.

Hell, the anti-Steven memes pretty much kicked into overdrive in the last half-year or so (mainly due to all the Jack Horner posting after The Last Wish) its gotten so bad that even YT'ers who had genuine issues with the show are going "Ok hold the fucking phone, did we even watch the same show?".
