I've been really captivated by anthropomorphic mouse ttrpg, Mausritter, lately and something that hit my like a brick when I started running it is that there's no perception/study roll equivalent and it's super interesting I'm not totally sure how I feel about it. It kinda makes me feel like my habits from other games of using perception checks to reveal information about a scene to my players has been a crutch. It forces such a different style of gming and I'm looking forward to feeling it out.

Yeah, Mausritter pulls a lot of design ethos from older styles of RPGs, where "perception" was either handwaived or else was an ability unique to specific characters. It can be a fun way to play! I hope ya' have fun giving that style of play a try!

adventure game style narration of player saying, "I look at the thing," and the GM dumping the physical description, and maybe some "you would know..." style descriptions is my absolute favorite style. Doing it, and receiving it.

done well it feels like a good adventure game of just logically pulling apart or navigating a thing.

Yea it just benefites from way more considered prep the the kinda loose prep ive been more easily been able to supplement with improv that ive been used to from my experience with fiction first games. but going hard on drawing maps is also fun just new to me.
