The thing that gets me is that there's an actual difference between

  • "the game was written for X so you should probably use something else" (dismissive)
  • "the game was written for X so you should probably use something else" (I have a bone to pick with the game/designer, and/or malicious)
  • "the game was written for X so you should probably use something else" (to make it Do What You Want you'll have to put in a lot of extra work in the around-the-game space, it might be worth looking at options that already do what you want)
  • "the game was written for X so you should probably use something else" (ignorant, haven't read the game in question)
  • "the game was written for X so you should probably use something else" (projecting an aura of authority to try to look bigger)

And due to the snippet soundbite emotion-based Proclamation and Values Judgment nature of social media, it's very hard to tell the difference unless you already know the poster, and asking "Oh, why are you hacking X" has a similar range of possible tones and it's a toss-up whether you'll be met with hostility or...

Anyway it sucks for everyone yeah, you're 100% right and my particular friction point is "in addition to playing lots and lots of games over the years, I really enjoy discussing what-goes-into-games and what-goes-into-play-experiences and have a couple actual papers published and no one actually wants to talk about that though they just want to relitigate D&D again sigh I'm so tired I don't want to fight I want to discuss"
