EA Games using "we were switching to a new graphical engine at the time" as a scapegoat on why so many of their mergers and acquisitions end in bankrupcies has completely poisoned what a game engine does in the average gamer's mind.
And the misunderstanding of what it does heavily undermines the genuine expertise some developers have to use engine limitations and tools to overcome hurdles and create a game.
