For context, the thing I said was extremely milquetoast. Basically that I think the way the core mechanics in D&D work are kinda inscrutable for new players and people new to TTRPGs, when compared to something like PbtA for example, and that I found it to be similar when I was picking up D&D in my early TTRPG days. So much of why a roll happens and why a certain result happens around a roll and why a roll is a particualr DC is to this day ????? to me on a system level.

but what's the point of learning your arms do 2d8+1 slashing damage if you don't take them up against people who prefer indies????? (in case this doesn't scan it is a joke and i agree with you)
