A buddy of mine has more Into The Dark terrain than he knows what to do with, so we put our heads together and sketched out some basic ideas.

  • The bulk of the board will be the Space Hulk itself, with the breachers entering through 3-4 separate points.

  • Players can enter with a Boarding Party of about 30-40 troops or Kill Teams of 6-10.

  • Boarding Parties have numbers and access to greater amounts of special weapons, but have little intel about the Hulk itself with objectives that are harder to achieve.

  • Kill Teams have little in the way of resources, but their individual agents are far hardier. Moreover, they have more intel about the Hulk and the gear to complete their objectives faster.

  • Gunfire, melee combat, and even sufficient movement increases the Alert Level, causing the malign intelligence within the Hulk to send more numerous and powerful forces against the invaders.

The balance we're trying to strike is that a united Kill Team could take on a single unit from a Boarding Party without serious issue, but more numerous or focused fire would cause them serious problems. If/when we have more ideas I'll share them out, but we're still in very early drafting stages.

You're cookin' here, hell yeah.

Commentary:

  • This is definitely gonna take more time than just a Kill Team/Into The Dark skirmish in order to be satisfying, that's neither a pro nor a con, just a feature
  • Are you considering this for standalone play / Big Fun Events, or for campaign play? I feel like it could be used for either, just different considerations for one or the other
  • I'd personally like to see it lean towards Mordheim-style campaign play, though that would require different kinds of advancement for boarding party vs. kill team in order to keep boarding party models from catching up to kill team operatives, but would also allow for more development on the side of the hulk itself.

Oh hell yes, notes. This idea is less than 48 hours old at time of writing, but for your consideration:

  1. We've got like four sets of Into The Dark terrain, and we might set up add'l space for "landing zones", haven't fleshed that bit out yet. The scale will have to be bigger than normal skirmishes, for sure

  2. If we can get the balance right, we'd definitely bring this to cons for one-shots. Campaign rules aren't on the radar just yet; we want to make sure it actually works first!

  3. My experience with campaign play (Mordheim, crusade games, etc.) is limited. I was never partial to the homework required, but it's definitely a cool idea!
