and welcome to MY cohost. I have put this off from my initial activation, mostly because I enjoy being an ephemeral online presence. I'm going to be upfront and say that you probably don't know me.

That's fine. I am primarily on Cohost to talk about roleplaying games. You can find mine here. What I have published on Itch.io should give you a good idea of the roleplaying games and kinds of roleplaying games that I am interested in. Sadly, there isn't a myanimelist for roleplaying games yet. I am by no means a popular author, luminary, or an expert; but here I am nonetheless writing something for you to read.

Some general rules I try to stick to when thinking about what to write are:

  1. Pushing beyond old topics of theorization for roleplaying games
  2. Distinguish between what the text used for a game is providing for me and what I am contributing to the game as it is played
  3. Articulate a particular aspect of the text as it impacted the game in a way that surprised, intrigued, or challenged me

You could peg me as a critic or reviewer, but I really see myself as a play-tester. Hopefully I can develop my writing here in a hobbyist capacity.

Rest assured, I'm here to post! From the time of writing ' don't really know if I'm going to drill into anything in specific, but I do really enjoy writing out de-briefs after playing trpgs which I think make for good post material.

I'm in the process of typing up a similar post on tumblr right now, pretending that what we learned here is something others will listen to. I think a blog would be a better move but I need more time to figure out what I want. I'll find a way to connect with everyone through archives and such; I also bet I can just find you online through canny exploration.

What did we learn here? Jokingly, I think it's that many of us can be friendly regardless of what games we play, that we have different ideas to pursue to different ends, and that such a thing is very pleasant to be engaged with. I think we've learned to reign in some claims, to share what makes games important to us, to actually read someone's post when they ask for a game recommendation, and to dig deeper into the itch.io bundle to find a book for a game you didn't know you even wanted to run.

Furthermore, I think we learned what positive engagement looks like, but most importantly to me the throughline was that I needed to talk less about games and play more of them if I wanted to get anywhere. Which is why during my time on cohost I took on running ICON, The Bureau in Robins, Voyage, Spire, Heart, my own game Textor Exilium; and playing Mausritter, MOTHERSHIP, Armor Astir: Advent, PLANET FIST, The Electrum Archives, LANCER, and His Majesty the Worm. I wish I could have played more; in fact I regret it.

But that is enough I suppose. Here we are at the end.

Talk less, Play more.

Or maybe it's a few questions.

I've just wrapped up a 4 session game with a group playing 5e. Had a ton of fun but it seems like a lot of my gripes any time I play come back to the system mechanics. I like rolling dice, don't get me wrong, but I can't help but feel like there has to be a way to make it more... Engaging? To be honest I'm not sure if I'm looking for more streamlined or just more "fun" for whatever that means. Regardless, I think my biggest issue with TTRPGs right now is I only have experience with 5e, and I want to broaden my horizons. So hit me with your recommendations. What's your favorite, most fun systems to play?

Also for what it's worth I'll probably be sticking to 10 session or less games for the foreseeable future as schedules don't really allow for much more than that, so things that work well in short bursts are also encouraged.

Also also I still wanna tiptoe into DMing some day and would like to start with something other than 5e. Preferably something a little more rules light so I have less time thinking about rules and more time crafting experiences. So I'll take recommendations on that too.

Basically one last call for recommendations! Thanks!

  • FIST because it has a ton of spinoff and 3rd party content.
  • AGON because it's cool to create challenges for Greek Heroes
  • Pokemon Dungeon Crawler everyone knows type advantages so it's easier to do the style of game where you can think laterally about problem solving.

Not an exhaustive list, but I do think they qualify as having simpler rules that afford you the space you need to "craft and experience." Bon chance!
