Good news: Got a used vr headset so I could mess with VR again
Bad news: Forgot that there's not a ton to do in vr. Anyone got recommendations?

I like to draw and code and sometimes do other things.

I really wish VR wasn't so hard. Even if it was limited to something on par with the now pretty old HTC Vive, some kind of DIY vr headset would be amazing. It feels like the market is either old SteamVR stuff, or Oculus Facebook Meta, and neither is really that appealing. If this kind of display tech was something people could fuck around with I'm sure we'd see all sorts of really cool designs and experiments.
Basically I wish we had the Voron equivalent of a vr headset
I saw someone talking about how, nowadays, they can't muster up the same enthusiasm for new tech because it always comes with the implication of it being used to harvest user data, advertise, generally just feel bleak and borderline dystopian.
I've had a thought relating to that for a while, where my main 'weird tech obsession' shifted from VR to 3d printing around like... 2020? Ish? And I feel like 3dp has the blessing of being really hard to get into.
Like, I don't wanna gatekeep or anything, and people getting into a hobby is great. But 3d printing is finicky, annoying, kind of expensive, arguably just not worth it sometimes, and that means facebook or amazon are never gonna try and make it some big profitable mainstream thing. It was tried in the early 2010s when people tried to get a 3dp in every home or whatever. And I kinda love that? It just feels nice to have a community that's sizeable, but still feels niche.
What are people's general thoughts on the state of VR/AR? I used to be really into the tech, but between Meta/Facebook, the software available, etc, I just lost a lot of that enthusiasm over time.
