One of my more shameful moments as a teen was when my original fat PS2's laser died, and I didn't realize that was the problem. I tried taking it apart and one of the ribbon cables on the inside disconnected. So I figured I broke it forever and threw it in the garbage

Really weird problem with my PS2 Slim (70000 series) - it won't read discs... unless I take it apart and manually hold down the two "lid closed" buttons, then turn it on with a disc on the spindle. Then it reads discs perfectly. What?

So it reads discs perfectly... when the laser actually gets activated. I jumped the gun a bit because I only tested one game and, on a fluke, it worked the first time I tried the "hold lid sensors down" trick. It seems to be inconsistent as to whether or not disc reading will be activated with both "lid closed" buttons held down. So there's either a problem with the contacts or the spring inside is messed up. But it's too late... I must put this off until I get some rest...
