What We Had Before
The Great Empire, Titanium Tyrants, No Gods Only Masters.
Many tens of thousands of years ago mortals found every corner of their world, cataloged every strange creature, learned of every spell, and the purpose of each magic item. There was only one place left to them that was filled with nothing but the vastest of secrets, Space. Using a mix of technology and magic never before heard of they reached into the void where the stars waited for them. These early scouting and research ships gave way to construction craft and freighters, then to colony ships and full on space stations. Mortals expanded into the cosmos as they felt their limitations removed and their futures in their hands.
In a few generations mortals expanded to encompass almost three fourths of the galaxy, hundreds of colonies all under different national flags but working to a common goal. Though then a nation found some powerful technology, Solar Warp Travel (the only way of traveling before was hyperlanes, Solar Warp Travel is faster and not limited by destination), it gave them the power to start taking over nations one after another. Not long later most of the colonized galaxy was under the rule of one nation, one flag, one power, The Great Empire. Under its rule magic and technology bloomed while entire species and once nations were turned into living experiments.
They ruled for several generations, shaping entire cultures and planets to their whim, until there was a massive revolt to overthrow the Great Empire. Wars raged across the galaxy for a generation, colonies destroyed and entire planets rendered uninhabitable or mutated beyond recognition. Eventually, the revolt won as the Emperor was destroyed and his government shattered from the inside. All that was left of the Great Empire was its impossible technology whose function and maintenance were forgotten through the wear of war.
Generations pass and the galaxy is still splintered into warring factions fighting over their freedom, power, and an ideal of what the galaxy was before the Great Empire. Scars still remain on many worlds and cultures, but most have picked up from the pieces left behind and started to build something new. There isn’t an all out war consuming the galaxy, but some fear all it will take is the right spark for it to all happen again.
