My whole childhood I never read the instructions on ramen and simply followed with what my older sisters did which was to drain the water after boiling and mix the packet in the noodles after that.
I still mostly make ramen stir fry rather than the "proper" soup
I don't remember how I learned to make it but I also always drained off 90% of the water before adding the mix.
