  • Costa: in 2011, in the Trafalgar Square Waterstones Costa, they tried to aggressively upsell me on a biscuit
  • Black Sheep: imo the name kinda implies they're from New Zealand, but they're not
  • Pret: coffee is unpleasant to drink
  • Coffee Republic: I don't remember the reason but I do remember standing in the Eastbourne Coffee Republic around 2009 saying "I will never drink in another Coffee Republic and I'm saying this out loud to make sure I remember"
  • Department of Coffee and Social Affairs: don't like the name
  • Anywhere selling Union Coffee: don't like the name, don't think things that aren't unions should call themselves unions (not as immoral as Pizza Union or the Ice Cream Union though)
  • Coffee #1: seems wrong somehow
  • Caffè Nero: cups are very wide, coffee cools down too quickly and is easy to spill
  • Mouse Tail: once told me off for putting a very small amount of sugar syrup in my (black, iced) coffee, which I don't even usually do! although if I did it would be fine! except somewhere inside I do feel like they were right to tell me off, so I hold the grudge even more strongly
  • Upper Crust: at some point it seemed to be store policy that if order fulfilment was slow they'd give you a larger coffee for free (or at least, this happened to me twice), which is annoying if you already find their coffees too large

Coffee shop chains I've bought at least one coffee in and don't have a grudge against:

  • Incoming
  • Greggs
  • Starbucks: actually fine, it's kind-of annoying to buy a coffee that isn't enormous but you can do it if you set your mind to it
  • AMT: no grudge, also I like that sometimes if you get a black coffee they will offer to put an ice cube in it
  • Caffè Ritazza
  • Soho Coffee: don't like the coffee but it's very funny that they didn't start in Soho and the name supposedly stands for "Simple, Original, Honest, and Organic"

in reply to @hollygramazio's post:

I mean no promises on any correlation between my holding of a grudge and what the coffee is actually like, but my Greggs experience has been a pretty uncomplicated "I order a coffee and they give it to me and I do not instantly develop any irrational but deeply held convictions"

in defence of the costa employee IIRC they have individual sales goals for each worker just like constantly glaring at them on the till screens. like food service is awful (did greggs, nice people but never again) but god it looked like nightmare fuel.
