We were driving out through the hills while the sky got darker than the mountains and I thought what if you could draw a circle in the air. Light pours out onto the grass and the road like a warm huge flashlight. Warm house light on the grass and on the blue green night. You could step up into it and your shadow would lay on the ground for a moment before drawing the circle closed again, like zipping the door on a tent. But lots of people can travel this way. You walk and walk until night and then can open the circle to a cave in the air. Step out of the mountains and into a warm house by a stream and a bridge, close and safe. It can be anything you like. Or, it will have an aspect decided by the place you have come to. Every point in the world opens to a slightly different shelter. They all work well enough. I don’t know if this is interesting so much as it is something I’d want to have very much. Once a day you can draw a circle and close a circle. Travel is always slow but it doesn’t matter because you can live entirely on what you find in the small caves. Just walk and sleep. You can take things out of them if you can carry them but why would you, you’ll just have to carry them. You don’t need to have things, but you can if you want. You could leave the circle open and live there, wait out the winter in a valley making new dresses out of the curtains. The caves are not very large, they are always night. If you poke around the edges you can hear the voices of other people resting. If you poke around the edges you can find small passages to the huge world they are in the margins of.
