hello average cohost follower:

if you're not aware already, i (used to) publish short stories on itch. i'd love to do this more, but i keep doing other things instead of writing smaller things. but! since it's creator day, i'll guide you to the small amount that there is~ it's mostly pay what you will, so feel free to throw me a little support if you can!

Blip in the Algorithm

this is a short story i wrote when i was really mulling over a lot of very complicated feelings. it's very messy & gay, and like a lot of my work has some focus on the relationship between a person & an AI. this was obviously before the present-day 'AI' craze ruined a lot of things i used to fantasize about. but they can still be fun fantasies. i like the idea of a little friend nearby that helps you through life's worst moments that doesn't understand everything about humanity but tries their best.

The Front

a very short story i wrote while waiting for my flight to arrive at the airport, exploring a slightly farther-future case from where Blip leaves off. it's a war story, kinda inspired by more mood-focused stories like Girls' Last Tour. it's a snapshot of life for a sentient gun and the girl that wields her & the girl that used to. it also includes my favorite subtle tachikoma reference.

ESC

and of course the much longer story that is interactive. ESC was my first game project & (you guessed it) also has some stuff to say about AI. there's a lot of weirdly prescient stuff in here considering that i wrote the initial manuscript around 2012 & edited it thru 2018 when it first released.

The other one

while it's not on itch because it's absorbed into the mess that is 'independent publishing' (they own the exclusive rights to publishing it despite it being barely supported etc etc), i also have a full-length novel that i wrote. if you know what it is, you know, but i'm hoping i can wrest control of it back from the publisher so i can eventually just post it on itch. they stopped selling e-book copies of it, so it's actually impossible to read unless you find a copy. it's a mess. but hopefully i can reclaim that, i'd love to share it again without being anxious about old stuff.

The future

obviously i'm working on a new story as a part of Project Astray. so much of it is based on a novel i've failed to write for years post-ESC, picking away at and then realizing the right form for it is not a novel but a game. maybe i'll write more that's just world stuff, who can say! but please let me know if you check out any of these stories & what you think πŸ™ i get a lot of attention for my music, but writing is another thing that brings me a lot of joy, so i love to hear about it.

I've thought about doing something like this for a really long time for some things I've had rolling around in my brain! Would you mind if I picked your brain sometime about your experiences doing this and the logistics of hosting that sort of stuff on itch? (I genuinely don't know when; you know how busy I get with my work when I already write for my 9 to 5.) I'm sure I could figure it out on my own, but it would just be nice to bounce some questions off somebody who's actually done it, ahaha.

the fun thing about writing in generally the same sorts of settings is that i like to connect as much as i can, whether it's direct references or just taking ideas & shifting them around. super appreciate hearing that you enjoyed it!!

These were good reads. I don't read a lot of 1st-person POV stories, but these were very enjoyable, with a particular highlight being how you establish the greater world without having to sidetrack into explanations for every little thing.

I hope you get those rights back!
