here is my theory: the first sign that any website or software is about to become rapidly more insufferable is a sudden (and usually terrible, disorienting, or both) visual redesign that is unnecessary and widely unpopular.

it also helps a ton (i.e. it doesn't help at all) that most of the time, such redesigns are done to mask the unwanted addition (or removal) of features. want to hide that button that opts out of PII-based ad tracking? easy, totally rearrange the options menu to obfuscate that!

It doesn't help that the majority of redesigns is to reduce features and simplify the application in an attempt to attract more public.

ARGGHHH yes and that is self-perpetuating too imo. i'm responsible for helping people with the photo kiosk at my job, and it only pulls from the DCIM directory on phones, so i have to guide people with just like, no concept of files or where/how they are stored how to move things into the correct directory so they'll show up on the kiosk... and it's like... what if we just... trusted people to learn a little more computer literacy instead of making everything into a magic box that nobody understands!!

I believe theres some "employee needs to show higher ups they actually do things at work" bullshit at play in a lot of these cases, pushing dumb shit just so they can say "YEAH I DID WORK PLZ DONT FIRE ME"
