The #Mega68k virtual console is a 68000-based fantasy console, sort of what would happen if an Amiga and a MegaDrive had a baby, being built by @eniko with some help from me.

To put it through its paces, I'm writing a game for it. The game is mainly intended to exercise the features of the console and dev environment, and it's only barely started being fun. (that's also why the aliens can fly through the scenery, and you can't)

Sadly the GIF is limited to a low framerate, but the real thing runs at a rock-solid 30fps, and would mostly run at 60fps except when the screen gets really busy.

Features you can see in this video:

  • Dual-layer parallax-scrolling backgrounds.
  • Lots of fast sprites - here the bullets, exhaust and sparks.
  • Very fast blitter for the larger stuff, e.g. the bosses.
  • Easy export of graphics from PNGs to the game (here "borrowed" - obviously just temporary)

I don't have any cool beam-racing tricks in this video, but you can do a lot of fun stuff there as well.

It's a pretty neat environment, and the limited scope of what you can do with that resolution and only 50,000 instructions per frame are really fun limitations to play in. I might even try to do my own art later!
