feels like the equivalent of films choosing specific locations to film in, businesses to put people in, stores to be spared in man of steel etc for a fully CG movie is 'can we put the characters in a location we control? that we profit from?'

tired: emoji movie cast needs to get to dropbox
wired: emoji movie cast needs to migrate to an Xperia 1 V

I feel the same way.

It was so unreal seeing so many people saying "You're killing trans people by giving the wizard game money." To then turn around and go support another franchise where the creator is actively hurting minorities. These so called "allies" like to just brush that under the rug when a franchise is something they care about. Same thing happened when Blizzard was exposed for how horrible they are for only a year later many who swore off Blizzard games for good played OW2.

It makes me sick people don't have any courage to protest or boycott media because of a nostalgic connection, wanting to generate content around it for monetization, or FOMO.

I think Sonic 1 made alot of companies realize if you make enough references to stuff fans like while still making a basic soulless movie for the general audience, both sides will approve. Sonic 2 reeks of that after how the first movie was talked about by fans.

I would say media and culture in general is at pretty low place right now. With companies only wanting to fund adaptations and reboots while shooting down new ideas because reboots have a better chance for success. I think about how Creg McCraken pitched 5 different new shows to WB and all were turned down. They only wanted to work with him unless he was rebooting one of his previous projects.

The triple A gaming industry has left me feeling empty as well which is why I have drifted heavily towards indie titles the past decade.

To wrap things up, yeah the film industry is in a creative low at the moment and people don't have a spine to not support this stuff even when the money they give to it is going towards actively hurting people.

Supporting smaller creators that actually make interesting things is what has kept me with hope.
